Sedation dentistry is safe. Before your sedation appointment, we will answer all your questions and concerns and thoroughly review your medical history. There is a choice of anxiety free medications that can be used. Your sedation dentist will decide based on your medical history and the medicines you currently are taking. Most of our patients are sedated using a drug called triazolam, which is commonly known as Halcion (a sleeping pill). Triazolam is very safe and has been used since 1970. It has a long and well-documented record of safe and effective use as a sedative agent in dentistry. The cost of Sedation dentistry is minimal to be monitored during your visit.

Anxious patients should see a specially trained dentist to create a safe a comfortable experience. New Jersey State Board of Dentistry requires a dentist to complete at least 40 hours of university-based didactic training and obtain a permit before administering oral conscious sedation to their adult patients. Your sedation dentist’s education does not simply end after attending an extensive course. In New Jersey, they must seek 20 hours of training every two years on NJ State Board approved courses. Dr. Kim and Dr. Seidner, Randolph Sedation Dentists, are members of DOCS, a leader in oral sedation education.
With IV sedation, you receive the sedation medication through your vein. You will be unconscious and unresponsive. With conscious sedation, you will be drowsy and can respond to questions. Should the conscious sedation patient drift off to sleep, they can be easily woken up.
Due to the amnesic effect of the medications, patients may have little or no recollection of their sedation visit. This is not the time to do online shopping as the patient may not remember their purchases! Patients cannot drive for 24 hours after. When the patient is home, they are advised to eat and hydrate to flush the medication out of their system to get a good night’s sleep for the next day. The best part of having conscious sedation dentistry is the patient is so relaxed during their visit; they tend to have less post-treatment soreness.
Patients who have not had dental care for many years often require complete reconstruction. In most cases, full mouth treatment can be rendered in one sedation visit and may require a simple follow-up appointment. Your sedation dentist can get much more work done while their patient is comfortable and relaxed. Look for a non-judgmental sedation dentist who will explain the care you need as well as how to maintain your dental work for years to come.
